As I planned my trip to Guatemala in 2018, I looked forward to visiting San Pedro, the town that bans the usage of single-use plastic bags. Thanks to this initiative of Mayor Mauricio Méndez, this community passed an anti-plastic bag law in 2016 to help clean the waters of Lake Atitlán, the lake where the town is located. This action sparked a pride movement and other towns are doing the same to protect the health of people from pollution and contamination. In Antigua, I enjoyed the baroque style buildings and churches and the charming cafes built in garden courtyards.
