The only object on earth visible from space is the Great Wall of China (Chángchéng). This ancient wonder was the main reason for my trip to the country with one of the oldest civilizations, and the largest population in the world.
One Sunday afternoon in the city of Xi’an, I was politely approached by a woman who asked if I could talk to the three girls standing by her side, soon I learned she was school teacher chaperoning her seven year old students so they could practice English. Hannah, Nicole, and Sophia were the adopted-western names of the girls determinate to give up playing time to excel in school. It was a memorable afternoon helping them, and learning about their school program.
Ancient sites in China reflect a disciplined culture but their traditions, and stories speak of love for family. I encountered smiles everywhere, people were kind and helpful, and despite the language barrier they made me feel welcomed.
