My trip to Romania was one surprise after another. The charm of Brasov, Oradea, Sinaia and Sighisoara—the towns visited in 2019—made me forget this country went through invasions, two world wars and decades of communist regime.
It was hard to think of the hardships Romania had endured when you see beautiful towns and meet friendly people. They were optimistic, easygoing, and most of all had a good sense of humor.
Romania joined NATO in 2004, the year before my first visit, and the European Union in 2007.
