The charm of Brasov, Oradea, Sinaia and Sighisoara\u2014the towns visited in 2019\u2014made me forget this country went through invasions, two world wars and decades of communist regime.<br \/>\nIt was hard to think of the hardships Romania had endured when you see beautiful towns and meet friendly people. They were optimistic, easygoing, and most of all had a good sense of humor.<br \/>\nRomania joined NATO in 2004, the year before my first visit, and the European Union in
